Seven tips to Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

At the beginning of each new year, millions of us develop our New Year’s Resolutions. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of us actually succeed in keeping and executing them. Why is this the case? Are the resolutions too drastic of a change in our routines? Do we fall back into bad habits again? Did unexpected circumstances get in our way?

We keep telling ourselves that this is the year we are going to do it. Whether it is getting back to the gym, starting a new job, getting out of that toxic relationship, or any other personal goal, you are hell bent on doing it this year! How are you going to make this year different? Everyone keeps giving you tips, so why is this not happening?

First, let’s start with you. You are unique. You are your own person. What one person suggests works for them, may not necessarily work for you. Having a system and process in place that is more in line with who you are and how you operate is a great way to start.

Second, start small by focusing on the small things. What is the motivating factor? Ask yourself, why are you doing this? Make sure to remind yourself daily the “Why,” with a sticky note against the bathroom mirror, a note in your cell phone, or an affirmation letter that you’ve created. You must remind yourself why you are doing this each and every day.

Third, don’t be so hard on yourself if you fail one day. Just get back on the horse again the next day! This is not a short game, it is the long game. You are creating new habits which take time, patience, and constant motivation.

Fourth, think positive. I am a big believer in positive auto-suggestion. Keep telling yourself everyday that you believe in yourself—that you have what it takes to stick to a game plan. Most importantly, don’t forget to celebrate the wins! Congratulate yourself every time you have a small win. We have a tendency to set lofty goals, which often seem unattainable afterwards. If you break the goal down into small steps that are reasonably attainable and celebrate those small victories, you will eventually achieve your goal! This will give you the motivation and self confidence to keep going. Remember Rome was not built in a day.

Sixth, surround yourself with a support system. Find other people who are goal oriented. The Law of Attraction states that like attracts like. Successful people attract successful people and misery likes company. You can share stories and struggles and maybe pick up some tips.

Finally, consider reading a book or listening to a podcast of other people who have overcome adversity to achieve a goal. Listening to other people, especially more than one, reinforces that we are all human and we all have adversities that we overcome. We are more like each other than you may realize. Listening to other people’s stories will help you realize that there is nothing wrong with you. These people were able to overcome adversity, so you can too!

In conclusion, here are 7 tips for you to achieve your New Year’s Resolutions:

  1. Develop you own unique system
  2. Figure out your Why?  What is your motivating factor
  3. Develop patience
  4. Positive Internal Dialogue
  5. Celebrate small goals (wins)
  6. Find a support system
  7. Read a book
